PhD Candidates

Xiaoxin Chen, MD

Xiaoxin Chen is a PhD student at the University of Waterloo under the supervision of Dr. Ben Thompson. He studied ophthalmology and optometry at Wenzhou Medical University in southern China and graduated with a master’s degree in Medicine. Currently, Xiaoxin is working with Dr. Thompson and Dr. Ari Chakraborty to explore the use of non-invasive brain stimulation to enhance visual plasticity in human adults.

Adrienne C. Quan, OD, FAAO.

Dr. Adrienne Quan is an assistant professor at Midwestern University, Chicago College of Optometry and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Health Sciences at Rush University. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biotechnology/Chartered Accountancy from the University of Waterloo and received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry. She subsequently completed her residency training in Vision Therapy / Low Vision Rehabilitation and Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation at Southern College of Optometry. Her research interests include brain injury vision rehabilitation, low vision and sensory substitution technologies, and electrophysiology. She will be completing her dissertation research as a member of the TVSLab investigating the role of noninvasive brain stimulation in vision rehabilitation following brain injury.

Graduate Students

Tayloran Atwell


Tayloran is currently a Masters student in the College of Graduate Studies here at Midwestern University. Prior to MWU, she completed her undergraduate studies at Southern Illinois University Carbondale where she received her B.S. in Biological Sciences and a minor in Chemistry. She will be completing her masters thesis research as a member of the TVSLab investigating the role of noninvasive brain stimulation in convergence insufficiency patients.

Research Assistants

Roman Somogy


Roman is currently an Optometry Student at the Chicago College of Optometry. Prior to Optometry school, Roman completed his undergraduate studies at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in Eau Claire, WI where he obtained a B.S. in Biology. He has been a part of the Translational Vision Science since his first year of optometry school at CCO, and has assisted on projects pertaining to oculomotor function and noninvasive brain stimulation. His current interests lie in virtual reality software development and amblyopia treatment.
